Maintenance Dredging Project
The Ministry of Construction and Public Infrastructure has commenced a maintenance dredging project for the harbours that are seeing its basins becoming shallow with time.
From the harbours that have been constructed in the islands of Maldives by the Government, the harbours in Faafu Atoll Bilehdhoo and Lhaviyani Atoll Kurendhoo have already been re-dredged. An excavator was used for the works needed in the harbour at Faafu Atoll bilehdhoo while a barge was additionally used in the works at Lhaviyani Atoll Kurendhoo harbour. The barge and excavator used in the latter has already been taken to Shaviyani Atoll Kanditheem for the works needed in it’s harbour.
The Ministry of Construction and Public Infrastructure has purchased a small dredger for use in this project where excavators cannot be utilized. Currently the dredger is moored at Thilafushi island in Kaafu Atoll. It is expected that the works planned in 7 islands for this year under this project will see a speedier progress with the help of this dredger.

Some tetrapods sent to the island of Fuvahmulah for crib repairsTetrapods have been sent to the island of Fuvahmulah in Gnaviyani Atoll on 20th August 2008 to repair the damages sustained by the cribs at the entrance of the harbour in the island. The harbour which was constructed by the grant aid of the Danish Government in 2002 requires approximately 1500 tetrapods for the repair works.
As the works cannot commence before all the tetrapods are on the site and as it takes and extended duration of time to transport the tetrapods concreted in the island of Thilafushi in Kaafu Atoll by sea transport, plans are underway to find a contractor who will do the concreting works of the tetrapods in either the island of Fuvahmulah or inthe island of Hithadhoo in Addu Atoll using the formwork provided by the Ministry of Construction and Public Infrastructure.
